What Are Your Primary Foods?

Hint: they’re not edible. To clarify, secondary foods, the ones you actually eat, are the ones that fuel our bodies and brains. Choose wisely because cleaner fuel makes for better performance, but that’s a topic for another day. What I’m talking about here is the stuff life is made of. The stuff that makes life worth living. The reasons we are here. Okay, okay, I know that sounds dramatic and they don't all necessarily fall under that category, but they are all fuel of a different kind. The foods that fuel our souls are the primary foods. Your primary foods might include the “reason for living” kind, like spending time with loved ones or doing work that inspires you. But things like, walking through the woods or meditating or listening to your favorite song are primary foods too. You may have heard the phrase “you can’t pour from an empty cup,” which means that to show up powerfully for others you must take care of yourself. Honoring and indulging in your primary foods is the way to do this. So how do you know what yours are? Anything that lights you up, inspires you, makes you feel happy or comforted or supported can be a primary food. If it fills your cup, it fits the bill. They come in all sizes. For example, traveling might be a primary food for you, but so might having a cup of tea on the front porch or reading a book. So start a list and keep adding to it so that you can get your RDA (recommended daily allowance) of primary foods because how you feed your soul is just as important as how you feed your body. IMO.
