Are You Really Hungry?

We expect a lot from our food, don’t we? I mean, when we reach for food how often is it because we are hungry? I know I sometimes go for food when I’m bored, stressed, tired, or even seeking some comfort. A quick release of dopamine is a sure-fire way to get that good feeling we are after. The brain is super efficient and one of the quickest ways to get there is to eat something. This way of coping is pretty normal, we all do it to some degree. It works until it doesn’t work. If you’re reading this then it’s possible that this way of coping is having some unwanted consequences. No worries, it just might be time to find another way. When we use food, we expect it to be entertaining, calming, motivating, comforting, etc. That’s a lot to ask! I think that if we engage the pause button when we are initially reaching for food we can get a little clearer about what we are really seeking. Just ask yourself, “am I actually hungry?” But, I mean really, like “would I eat vegetables right now?” If the answer is no, then ask yourself what feeling you are looking for. Getting real about what you are feeling just helps you to be more mindful about what drives your choices. Hey, the more you know:)
